Printers and photocopiers are the important office equipments. Without these, normal working seems almost impossible. The stores dealing with office equipments offer variety of printers. Selection depends upon the nature and volume of requirements. Generally, we have two options for selecting printers- inkjet printers and laser printers. The ink cartridge in both the printers makes significant difference in operational characteristics. Printing ink in inkjet printers is packed in liquid form in the cartridges. The printing ink of laser printers is packed as dry powder in the form of toner.

Toner is the powder that is used in photocopiers and laser printers to create printed text or images on papers. In its earliest form it used to be simple carbon powder. After some years, its quality was improved to make the printouts better. New variant of carbon powder toner had the mix of polymer. The polymer used varies from one manufacturer to another because there is wide range of these polymers that can be used for this purpose. Polyester resin, Styrene acrylate copolymer and styrene butadiene copolymer are commonly used polymers.

Ink in the inkjet printers spreads itself on the paper in small drops being released from cartridge as per command while the powder of laser printers melts by the heat of fuser and then spreads over the paper. If we compare the cost, printing cost of laser printers is considerably lower than to that of inkjet printers. This is the most common reason that popularity of laser printers is increasing fast among the business community where more printouts are needed. In old versions of laser printers, low-price carbon ink powder was poured into a reservoir fixed inside the printers by the users from a powder ink bottle. Current printers incorporate sealed cartridge that is proprietary designed. However, it is also possible to refill these cartridges even by third party. Used toner cartridges can be sold out to the supplier of new cartridges. Modern laser printers cartridges come in two major types- black and color. The color printers’ cartridges come in CMYK format that is represented by cyan, magenta, yellow and black.

Replacement of toner can be done easily either by self or by calling the service engineer from authorized outlets. The cartridges are easily available and can be had by placing order online. If you are trying to replace it by self, you must be careful because inhaling of toner may generate some adverse health effects. If you feel the presence of powder on your clothes or body, clean it with cold water instead of hot or warm.
